Walking & Running Routes in Foggy Bottom

Take advantage of the Washington D.C. area and walk or run outside in the Foggy Bottom area. If you want to run around Foggy Bottom there are various routes that can be taken throughout the area. The Walking and Running Routes in the George Washington University vicinity guide can offer some variety of routes from the Smith Center.

If you want to run at the Mount Vernon Campus there are many Mount Vernon campus trails to walk and run on too! All routes start and end at the Charles E. Smith Center on 22nd and G Streets, NW. Due to the nature of running in the District of Columbia, many of these routes will take you across streets that are heavily traveled by automobiles. Walkers and runners are advised to take extra precautions when crossing these intersections.

Remember to run safely–run with a friend. If you choose to run alone, only run in areas that are familiar to you, never run with headphones on, and run in the daylight.

  3. Left on the circle to the front of the Lincoln Memorial
  4. Walk/run the length of the Reflecting Pool to 17th Street
  5. Left on 17th Street. Cross Constitution Avenue and continue to G Street
  6. Left on G Street to the Smith Center

  3. Right on E Street. Pass the Kennedy Center and continue to the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge
  4. Cross over the bridge to the Virginia side. Make a right onto the bike/running path adjacent to the G.W. Parkway
  5. Right on small bridge leading to Roosevelt Island
  6. Run one complete lap around the islands path 7. Return to campus using the same route

  1. Left on G Street to 23rd Street
  2. Left on 23rd Street. Cross Constitution Avenue and continue to the inside sidewalk of the Lincoln Memorial Circle
  3. Right at the circle to the far pedestrian sidewalk of the Arlington Memorial Bridge
  4. Cross over the bridge into Virginia
  5. Left on the bike/running path adjacent to the G.W. Memorial Parkway to the George Mason Memorial Bridge
  6. Cross over the bridge into Washington. Pass the Jefferson Memorial and continue to 15th Street
  7. Walk/run on 15th Street. Pass to the right of the Washington Monument and continue to Constitution Avenue
  8. Left on Constitution Avenue to 17th Street
  9. Right on 17th Street. Cross Constitution Avenue and continue to G Street
  10. Left on G Street to the Smith Center

  2. Left on 23rd Street. Cross Constitution Avenue and continue to the Lincoln Memorial Circle
  3. Left on the circle to the front of the Lincoln Memorial
  4. Walk/run the length of the Reflecting Pool. Cross 17th Street. Pass to the right of the Washington Monument. Cross both 15th and 14th Streets to Jefferson Drive
  5. Walk/run down Jefferson Drive to 3rd Street
  6. Left on 3rd Street to Madison Drive
  7. Walk/run down Madison Drive. Cross 14th, 15th and 17th Streets to the Lincoln Memorial
  8. Return to the Smith Center via 23rd Street

  1. Left on G Street to Virginia Avenue
  2. Right on Virginia Avenue to Rock Creek Parkway
  3. Cross Rock Creek Parkway at the traffic light and make a right on the path along Rock Creek Parkway
  4. Walk/run this path to the automobile tunnel at the National Zoo
  5. Make a U- turn and return to the Smith Center using the same route

  1. Left on G Street to 23rd Street

  2. Left on 23rd Street. Cross Constitution and continue to the Lincoln Memorial Circle
  3. Left on the circle, running halfway around the Lincoln Memorial
  4. Continue on 23rd Street. Cross over Independence Avenue at the traffic light. 23rd Street becomes Ohio Drive
  5. Walk/run on the sidewalk along the Potomac River. Continue on Ohio Drive and cross the short bridge leading to the Jefferson Memorial. Make a left at the end of the bridge.
  6. Pass the Jefferson Memorial, staying on the sidewalk until you reach 14th Street.
  7. Left on 14th Street. Pass the Bureau of Printing and Engraving and continue until Jefferson Drive
  8. Right on Jefferson Drive. Cross 3rd Street. Run 3/4 around the Capitols reflecting Pool
  9. Cross over 3rd Street heading back toward the Washington Monument using Madison Avenue
  10. Walk/run straight down Madison Drive to 15th Street
  11. Right on 15th Street to Constitution Avenue
  12. Left on Constitution Avenue to 17th Street
  13. Right on 17th Street. Cross Constitution Avenue and continue to G Street
  14. Left on G Street to the Smith Center

  1. Left on G Street to 23rd Street
  2. Left on 23rd Street. Cross Constitution Avenue and Continue to the Lincoln Memorial Circle
  3. Left on the circle, running halfway around the Lincoln Memorial
  4. Continue on 23rd Street. Cross over Independence Avenue at the traffic light. 23rd Street becomes Ohio Drive
  5. Walk/run on the sidewalk along the Potomac River. Continue on Ohio Drive and cross over the short bridge
  6. After crossing over the bridge, make a right and continue running along Ohio Drive to the end of Haines Point
  7. Continue the loop around Ohio Drive. Walk/run along the path adjacent to the Washington Channel until 14th Street
  8. Left on 14th Street. Pass to the left of the Jefferson Memorial
  9. Right at the small bridge and return to the Smith Center using the same route from the bridge
