The George Washington University’s Food Institute is proud to host Food Week 2017, starting on October 23rd and ending on the 29th. Stemmed from the Food Day movement spearheaded by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, GW’s Food Week is set to inspire students to make changes in their own diets and to take action to solve food-related problems in our communities.
We’re proud to host and co-host a series of exciting events during Food Week, open to all members of the GW community:
Sunday, 10/22/2017, 2:30-5:30PM: GW GroW Garden and Potluck Dinner. Meet us at the GroW Garden on H St between 23rd and 24th street to get your hands dirty! Gardening will be followed by a potluck dinner, so bring your favorite fall dish to share plus a reusable plate and cutlery.
Monday, 10/23/2017, 6:30-8:00PM: For Meatless Monday, freshman are welcome to join Food Ambassador, Lauren, in the Thurston Media room to learn how to make the most of their dining dollars while also eating sustainably.
Tuesday, 10/24/2017, 12:00-1:00PM: Join us in District House B117 for a Sustainability Student Lunch with Christopher Bradshaw. Bradshaw is the Executive Director of Dreaming Out Loud, a nonprofit in DC building a healthy and equitable food system, and will discuss using the food system to build equity and justice in DC.
Wednesday, 10/25/2017, 6:30-8:30PM: Bought more vegetables than you can eat? Prof. Tara Scully from the Biology Department is leading a Pickling Workshop in Bell 207. She’s excited to teach us about the science behind pickling and fermentation and will help students make kimchi, pickled carrots, and onions.
Thursday, 10/26/2017, 7:30-8:30PM: Join us for a conversation with powerful women in food. Suzanne Simon, co-founder of Chaia, Nikki Rappaport, Brand and Innovation Director at CAVA, and Maddie Morales, Outreach Coordinator at the Common Market will have a discussion moderated by Kavita Patel, Director of Local Purchasing and Programs at Whole Foods (Mid-Atlantic).
Friday, 10/27/2017, 6:30-9:00PM: With Green GW, we will be co-hosting a viewing of Wasted! The Story of Food Waste. Famous chefs like Anthony Bourdain and Dan Barber explore what it means to waste food in today’s world and what we can do to eliminate this complex issue.
Sunday, 10/29/2017, 11:00-12:20: Interested in buying your groceries outside the GW bubble? Join us for a tour of ins-and-outs of the the Dupont Circle FRESHFARM Market. Learn how to use your GWorld to buy fruits, vegetables, baked goods, among other treats!
